Handcrafted pens by Patrick Sikes

Took a quick shot while I was in the shop the other day turning out a Koa wood slimline pen. I was in the “slurry sanding” phase using 600 grit sand paper and tung oil to achieve an extra smooth finish.

My wife Stephanie has been bugging me for a “clicky” pen since I started penturning hobby last year. I had the kit, bushings, and bit, but the burl she wanted was too bowed for my drilling setup (using the lathe, as I don’t have a drill press).

Well, that issue was solved by the Easter Bunny!!?? No, she did not bring me a drill press (my birthday maybe, hint), but she bought some new acrylic blanks. One in particular she really liked called “Summer”. And here is the result.

Just though I would share a photo of the last major chip carving project I completed in December last year.

It is a basswood trunk (~ 24″ x 12″ x 12″). This trunk was purchased from a vendor at the Norsk Hostfest a few years back and was carved for my mother-in-law Jacque. She requested the project for storage of her America Girl Doll clothing. It was carved with a floral design including a tulip pattern on the top and front of the trunk and a grid & rosette pattern on each side. It was finished with spray polyurethane.

This is the latest pen I turned last night. It is based on a beaded turning article I read a few weeks ago at http://www.yoyospin.com/bead. It is turned out of one of the last few pieces of Honduran Rosewood I purchased off eBay when I first got my new lathe. This stuff is so hard it turns like butter!
The pen kit is a slimline style kit with gold tone fittings.
